Converting Space | Sandton, South Africa

Our client, the creative director of a successful branding & design company in Johannesburg, approached designsquared to come up with a design to breath life into his 90′s Sandton townhouse  that comprised a series of disconnected & pocketed spaces at each level. Part of the brief was to convert the existing roof space to an attic studio.

The challenge was finding a way of connecting the floor plates horizontally & vertically that could be legible, related and create an experience of movement through space. The “sculpted armature” that breaks through all levels with a staircase wrapped around it brought this consistency and legibilty as one can visually connect all floors as well as providing a journey within a small space. The central concrete sculplture set the stage for a complete refurbishment of the home,  something the client referred to as “a revelation”
